Creative Draft Order Ideas

Fantasy Football league draft orders are typically decided using a boring old randomizer. Why not inject a little more excitement into your next draft? Whether it’s virtual or in-person, here are four fun ideas to make your next draft a more memorable one.

March Madness Bracket

A tale as old as time… the March Madness Bracket has solved many disagreements. The rules are simple. Everyone in your league fills out a bracket and scores them accordingly. The most common method is to award 1 point for correct predictions in the first round, 2 in the second round, 4 in the third, 8 in the fourth, 16 in the fifth, and 32 in the sixth and final round. You can create a group on ESPN which tracks March Madness brackets using a 10-20-40-80-160-320 scoring system. However, this is no different from the method above, other than each point value is just multiplied by 10. In the case of a tie, have everyone guess the sum of the final game score.

Predict the NFL Preseason Outcome

Want to have a later draft? Create a bracket for the first 4 weeks of the NFL preseason. Run the scoring along the same lines as the March Madness Bracket and you’re golden. Have everyone guess the final score of the week 4 game in order to settle a tie. The NFL preseason schedule is expected in April or May. A draft order event like this will not only help to keep people engaged, it will also help everyone to get a better feel for how they might want their team to shape up.

Pick the Kentucky Derby Outcome

The Kentucky Derby is on April 30th, 2021. There are many ways that you could use this event as a unique way to randomize your draft. Here are two suggestions. Suggestion 1 - Randomly assign everyone in the league a horse to cheer for. How their horse places in the race, represents their place in the draft. Suggestion 2- Have everyone in the league choose their own variation of the Win, Place, Show. In the event of a tie (correctly picking the W, P, S) - have everyone guess the winning speed prior to the race and the closest time will break the tie.

Take a Free IQ Test

Everyone in your league seems to think they’re the smartest. It’s time to put them to the test. At the end of the test, participants receive a score and how long it took them to complete the test (in case of a tie). It really shouldn’t take anyone more than 10 minutes to complete, so put a timer on it to keep people honest. Have them send you a screenshot of their results within 15 minutes, then sort them out! The brightest crayon in the box gets to choose their draft position and then just go down the line.
